Gua Sha or scraping tools are gently applied to the skin with specific techniques, resulting in a smooth, contoured appearance, a deeply relaxing and enjoyable experience. Any disturbance affecting the delicate symphony of the jaw muscles can trigger the cycle characteristic of temporomandibular (jaw) joint dysfunction (TMJD), causing muscle spasm that results in pain, muscle tenderness and tissue damage commonly affecting the jaw, neck, scalp and in many cases, the facial area itself often causing a debilitating cycle of pain that may lead to low mood and depression.
Remedial Facial Therapy offers a range of treatment options to relieve the symptoms associated with TMJD and orofacial pain, often a combination of manual therapy techniques such as Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), clinical massage, postural training, exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of the jaw and neck and a home care support programme. If appropriate, external and intra-oral techniques are utilised, depending on your comfort level and requirements.
